Hypnosis as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) involves the use of what has been termed 'gut directed hypnotherapy'. Dr PJ Whorwell at the University Hospital of South Manchester first developed Gut Directed Hypnotherapy in 1984 It was shown that hypnotherapy could substantially reduce symptoms of IBS in 80% of cases. And an even better success rate (90%) has been reported here http://www.thefamilygp.com/hypnotherapy-and-ibs.htm.

Gut Directed Hypnotherapy is the utilisation of hypnosis to reduce the sensitivity of the abdominal organs. During the experience of hypnosis you will be given suggestions aimed at calming your irritated bowel, thus reducing pain, bloating and diarrhoea/constipation. I will also address any underlying causes such as stress, knowing that IBS always has some psychological component.  IBS is often referred to as a psychosomatic disorder. This means that the physical symptom is caused or aggravated by some form of psychological stress.

In addition to hypnotherapy, attention is given to how your gut responds to life events and how your style of thinking can influence your feelings and the IBS symptoms. This usually entails using an approach known as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Gut Directed Hypnotherapy addresses many of the above points through suggestions described as ego strengthening. The physical symptoms are addressed through the use of imagery with suggestions that are metaphorical representations of your gut.

At stow-hypno I use hypnotherapy to enable you to increase your ability to deal with the events of every day life in a more competent, confident and effective way. In addition it teaches your gut to behave in a way that is more comfortable for you.
